Johannesburg, 19 October 2026 — The November diesel price 2026 increase is shrinking. Central Energy Fund data to the middle of October, reported by TopAuto on 16 October, points to a rise of R1.38 a litre for 50ppm diesel. That would take the inland wholesale price to R34.67 from Wednesday, 4 November. Meanwhile, 500ppm is set to rise by R1.32 to R33.27.
Those figures are less than half of the early projections. At the start of October, the first days of data pointed to R2.91 for 50ppm and R2.56 for 500ppm. Petrol has eased even more, from an early R4.58 on 95 to about R2.06 now. However, the data is unaudited, and the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources only confirms prices a few days before they take effect.
The main reason is the currency. The rand firmed to about R16.53 to the dollar, from roughly R16.70 a week earlier, while Brent crude stayed above $100 a barrel. “The recent rand appreciation has reduced the potential size of the fuel hikes building,” said Investec chief economist Annabel Bishop.
How The November Diesel Price 2026 Projection Moved
| Report | 50ppm diesel | 500ppm diesel |
|---|---|---|
| 7 October, so first days | Up R2.91 | Up R2.56 |
| 8 October, then average to 7 October | Up R2.18 | Up R1.92 |
| 9 October, then average to 8 October | Up R1.97 | Up R1.77 |
| 13 October, so mid-October | Up R1.59 | Up R1.45 |
| 15 October, still mid-month | Up R1.46 | Up R1.37 |
| 16 October, so the latest | Up R1.38 | Up R1.32 |
Correcting The Desk’s Low Case
On 9 October, the Desk’s November fuel price report set out a range of about 42 cents to R2.91 for 50ppm. The latest figure sits in the lower half of that range. However, the 42-cent low case has not held. It assumed that the rest of October would match a single near-zero reading on 7 October, but the daily figures rose again from 8 October. So the projection has settled between the two ends, rather than at the bottom.
What Wednesday’s Budget Could Change
Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana tables the medium-term budget policy statement on Wednesday, 21 October. Any decision on the general fuel levy would most likely come then. In addition, the R10 billion Second Special Appropriation Bill, which would fund the Central Energy Fund’s Equalisation Fund, still awaits a debate in the National Assembly. Committee chair Mmusi Maimane wants relief in place before December. However, Godongwana has warned that more relief would be costly, and Bishop expects a smaller tax overrun this year, which leaves little room. The levy therefore stays at R3.93 a litre on diesel for now, as the Desk explained in its fuel levy relief report.
Analysis
What The November Diesel Price 2026 Means For Fleets
A smaller increase is still an increase. 50ppm has risen by R6.38 a litre since the end of August, as the Desk reported with the official October fuel prices. If the latest projection holds, November adds R1.38 on top, so diesel would be up R7.76 a litre in three months. That is about 29% on the August price of R26.91. Moreover, the Reserve Bank meets again in November, and Bishop has warned that fuel could feed into higher rates.
The Desk Calculation: R1.38 In Rand Terms
Here are the sums, with the assumptions shown. First, the monthly cost. A truck that burns 4,000 litres a month pays about R5,520 more on 50ppm, or R5,280 on 500ppm. That is R6,120 less than the early projection implied. Second, the three-month view. Against August, the same truck now pays about R31,040 more a month for diesel. For a 20-truck fleet, November alone adds about R110,400 a month.
Third, the range. The latest projection covers roughly half of the pricing window. If the rest of October averaged zero, the rise would be about 69 cents. If, instead, it returned to the early-October level, the rise would be about R2.15. Finally, the relief. In March, government said its R3 levy cut for April would cost about R6 billion for the month. On that ratio, cancelling a R1.38 increase would cost about R2.8 billion a month, so R10 billion would cover roughly three and a half months.
The Numbers Behind The November Diesel Price 2026
Fleet Impact
How Fleets Can Plan For November
The range has narrowed, so budgeting is easier than it was two weeks ago. Even so, the final figure depends on the rest of October and on Wednesday’s budget. The part a fleet controls is consumption. Digit D-Fuel logs every refuel and every litre the engine draws, so an operator can model November’s price on its own consumption rather than an industry average. Vehicle tracking for fleet management then shows the idling, detours and empty kilometres that waste diesel at any price.
- First, budget on R1.38 for 50ppm, but keep a buffer. The plausible range now runs from about 69 cents to R2.15.
- Second, watch Wednesday’s budget. A levy decision would change the November figure more than the remaining two weeks of oil data.
- Third, hold fuel clauses until the official figure. The department confirms prices only a few days before 4 November.
- Finally, cut waste now. Whatever the November diesel price 2026 turns out to be, a litre lost to theft or idling already costs more than R33.
Fleet Technology
Fleet Technology For A Moving Fuel Price
The pump price is set in Pretoria. The litres, however, are set in the depot. Digit D-Fuel compares the fuel each truck receives with what it burns, and it flags a gap on the day it appears. DigitFMS tracking adds the routes and idle hours behind each fill. As a result, a fleet can tell its customers exactly what November’s increase costs per load. Cartrack, Netstar, Tracker, Ctrack and MiX by Powerfleet offer alternatives. DigitFMS fits and services both systems through more than 100 franchise branches across South Africa.

Questions Answered
Frequently Asked Questions: November Diesel Price 2026
How Much Will Diesel Rise In November 2026?
The latest projection points to about R1.38 a litre for 50ppm and R1.32 for 500ppm. That would take 50ppm to R34.67 inland. However, the figures are unofficial until the department confirms them.
Why Has The Projected Increase Fallen?
Mainly because the rand strengthened, to about R16.53 to the dollar. Oil prices stayed above $100 a barrel, so the improvement came largely from the currency.
When Does The November Price Take Effect?
On Wednesday, 4 November 2026. The department usually announces the final figures a few days before.
Will There Be Fuel Levy Relief?
No decision has been announced. The medium-term budget on 21 October is the likeliest moment, while the R10 billion fuel-relief bill still awaits a debate in Parliament.
What Does The Increase Cost A Truck?
For a truck that uses 4,000 litres of 50ppm a month, about R5,520 extra. Compared with August, the same truck pays about R31,040 more each month.
Was The Early R2.91 Projection Wrong?
It reflected only the first few trading days of the window. Since then, the rand has firmed, so the November diesel price 2026 projection has fallen to less than half of that early figure.
