Record Diesel Price 2026: SA 50ppm Heads for R33

Johannesburg, 29 September 2026 — The record diesel price 2026 is now eight days away. According to MyBroadband, Central Energy Fund (CEF) data to 24 September puts inland wholesale 50ppm diesel at about R33.04 a litre. That price would apply from Wednesday 7 October. That is roughly R2.99 above the September price of R30.05. It would also beat the May wholesale record.

Petrol is also heading the same way. The same data shows inland 95 unleaded at about R29.92, up from R26.92. Similarly, 93 unleaded would reach about R29.58. By comparison, the previous petrol record was R28.06 in June. At the coast, meanwhile, 95 would reach roughly R29.05. MyBroadband also estimated that retail diesel could approach R36.34 a litre once retailers add their margins.

Yet fuel is only half of the squeeze. On 23 September, the South African Reserve Bank raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 7.25%. The Monetary Policy Committee voted unanimously, and prime rose to 10.75% from 25 September. Governor Lesetja Kganyago said conflict in the Middle East and the Russia–Ukraine war are disrupting global supply chains. As a result, they add to inflationary pressure.

Why The Record Diesel Price 2026 Keeps Rising

The gap has widened every week this month. On 4 September, the first CEF reading showed a 50ppm under-recovery of about R3.11. It then narrowed to about R2.03 by 10 September. After that, it climbed back to R2.41 on 14 September and R3.01 on 21 September, TimesLive reported. International product prices, however, drove most of it. Specifically, TimesLive cited tension in the Middle East and shipping disruption around the Strait of Hormuz. A weaker rand has also stopped cushioning the move. As a result, the October adjustment now looks set to land near the top of the month’s range.

Relief Is Not On The Table

Civil rights group AfriForum has renewed calls for a cut to the fuel levy, MyBroadband reported. However, nothing from Treasury suggests a repeat of the April to July relief, which cost R17.2 billion. The Desk covered that package in its fuel levy relief report. Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank expects headline inflation above 5% in late 2026 and early 2027, from 4.4% in August. It now sees growth of only 1.2% this year, down from 1.4%. In other words, fleets face higher fuel and higher finance costs in a slower economy.

Analysis

What The Record Diesel Price 2026 Costs A Fleet

For road freight, however, the two increases are not equal. Fuel is by far the larger line. According to the Road Freight Association, diesel accounts for 35% to 55% of operating costs. The share depends on the route and vehicle. Finance costs, by contrast, move slowly and in small steps. Still, both land in the same month. The October outlook the Desk published on 11 September priced a R2 increase. Now the number is closer to R3, while the rate hike comes on top. So the monthly cost picture has changed twice in three weeks.

The Desk Calculation: The Double Hit Per Truck

Here is the arithmetic, with the assumptions shown. First, take a long-haul truck that burns 4,000 litres of 50ppm diesel a month. At an increase of about R2.99 a litre, that truck costs roughly R11,960 more a month from 7 October. Next, take the same truck on a R1.2 million finance deal over 60 months at prime. When prime moves from 10.5% to 10.75%, the instalment rises from about R25,793 to about R25,942. That is roughly R149 a month, or about R1,790 a year.

Together, the double hit comes to about R12,100 per truck per month. Fuel makes up almost all of it. Across a 20-truck fleet, the diesel increase alone adds roughly R239,000 a month. By contrast, the rate hike adds about R35,700 a year for the same fleet. Therefore, the fuel line decides whether October’s contracts make money.

Fleet Impact

The Fleet Playbook Before 7 October

Eight days is enough to protect October’s margin, provided the work starts now. The priority is fuel, because it carries almost all of the increase. First, every contract needs a working diesel clause before the new price lands. Second, every litre needs an owner. At R33 a litre, a 100-litre discrepancy per truck per month costs R3,300. Digit D-Fuel truck fuel monitoring reconciles tank levels with actual consumption and flags sudden drops. Meanwhile, live vehicle tracking for fleet management shows idling, route deviations and excess kilometres. Those are also the quickest savings to find.

  • First, reprice before 7 October. A 4,000-litre truck costs about R11,960 more a month. So any rate without a fuel clause loses that amount from the first day.
  • Second, fill depot tanks this week where storage allows. At a R2.99 increase, every 10,000 litres bought at September’s price saves roughly R29,900.
  • Third, cut idling now. Because diesel is heading towards R33 a litre, an hour of idling now costs close to R100.
  • Finally, plan for the record diesel price 2026 to last. The Reserve Bank sees inflation above 5% into early 2027. Therefore, budget October’s cost base through the festive season rather than hoping for relief.

Fleet Technology

Fleet Technology For A R33 Litre

When one line item jumps 10% in a month, the fleet that can see it wins the rate conversation. Digit D-Fuel follows each litre from the fill to the engine. So a manager knows what every truck burned and whether anything went missing. Tracking data then separates productive kilometres from idling and detours. As a result, the fuel clause in a contract rests on measured consumption rather than an estimate. Cartrack, Netstar, Tracker, Ctrack and MiX by Powerfleet also sell telematics to South African fleets. DigitFMS, however, backs its systems with more than 100 franchise branches. That puts installation and support close to depots across the country.

Questions Answered

Frequently Asked Questions: Record Diesel Price 2026

How High Will Diesel Go In October 2026?

CEF data to 24 September points to about R33.04 a litre for inland wholesale 50ppm diesel. That is roughly R2.99 more than in September. That would set a new record. However, the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources will only confirm the official price in early October.

When Does The New Fuel Price Take Effect?

New prices apply from Wednesday 7 October 2026. The department normally announces them a few days before. Until then, the CEF figures remain projections that can still move with oil prices and the rand.

What Did The Reserve Bank Decide?

On 23 September, the Monetary Policy Committee unanimously raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 7.25%. As a result, prime rose to 10.75% from 25 September. The Bank cited the oil shock and conflict in the Middle East and Ukraine.

What Does The Record Diesel Price 2026 Cost A Truck?

For a truck using 4,000 litres a month, the Desk estimates about R11,960 more in October. In addition, the rate hike adds about R149 a month to a R1.2 million finance deal. Together, that is roughly R12,100 per truck per month.

Will Government Cut The Fuel Levy Again?

AfriForum has called for it, but Treasury has given no sign of a repeat. The April to July relief cost R17.2 billion and has been fully reversed. Therefore, fleets should budget at the full projected price.

What Should Fleet Owners Do Before 7 October?

First, add or reset fuel clauses in every contract. Then fill depot tanks where storage allows. Finally, use fuel monitoring and tracking to find idling, detours and unexplained losses. After all, each litre now costs about R33.
