Johannesburg, 11 September 2026 — The October fuel price 2026 outlook now points to record prices for petrol and diesel. Central Energy Fund (CEF) snapshots published this week show 95 petrol under-recovering by R1.93 to R2.05 a litre. Petrol 93 sits at R1.81 to R1.93. Diesel sits at R1.65 to R1.73 a litre for 0.05% sulphur and R1.98 to R2.03 for 0.005%. The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) sets the official figure at month end. It takes effect on Wednesday 7 October.
Oil is the driver. Brent crude closed above $100 a barrel on Wednesday for the first time since 23 July, News24 reported. Fresh attacks on Saudi energy facilities and renewed hostilities involving Iran, the Houthis and the United States drove the move. It touched $102.19 overnight into Thursday. The rand, near R16.15 to the dollar, is cushioning part of the rise. It is not enough to close the gap.
The numbers matter because September already set a high base. From 2 September, petrol rose R1.34 a litre and diesel by R2.93 to R3.15. Inland wholesale 50ppm diesel now costs R30.05. If the current under-recovery holds, 95 petrol would climb from R26.92 to about R28.85 inland. That beats the June record of R28.06. Diesel would reach roughly R32.08, past the May wholesale peak of R31.18. Before the Middle East war, diesel had never cost more than R25.53 a litre.
Why The October Fuel Price 2026 Is Still Moving
Three weeks of the review period remain. The CEF figure is a running average, so every trading day to month end moves it. Moreover, the first-week reading was worse than today’s. On 4 September, 50ppm diesel showed an under-recovery of R3.11 and petrol R2.11 to R2.22. The gap has narrowed since, even as Brent climbed. A firmer rand and softer diesel refining margins explain the difference. However, a sustained $100 barrel would reverse that quickly.
No Levy Relief In Sight
Fleets should not bank on Treasury. The general fuel levy stands at R4.10 for petrol and R3.93 for diesel. Government cut it by R3.00 in April and zeroed the diesel levy in May. It then reinstated the full levy by July, at a cost of R17.2 billion. IOL reported on Thursday that a repeat is unlikely. In addition, the slate levy already sits at 83.28 cents a litre. That charge repays a slate deficit of R9.5 billion at the end of July.

What The October Fuel Price 2026 Means For Road Freight
A further R2 on diesel lands on operators who have absorbed more than R11 a litre since March. The Desk has tracked every step: R6.87 between March and July, R1.38 in August and R2.93 in September’s official adjustment. October would push the cumulative increase past R13 a litre on 0.05% diesel. For a fleet on contract rates agreed in the first quarter, that is a rise of well over 50% in its largest cost line. Furthermore, the levy relief that softened the second quarter has gone. The full basic fuel price now reaches the pump.
The Desk Calculation: October Diesel Per Trip And Per Truck
Use the same rig the Desk priced in September. A side-tipper averaging 2.0 km per litre on the roughly 1,000 km Emalahleni–Richards Bay round trip burns about 500 litres. At R2.03 a litre, October adds about R1,015 to each round trip. Stack that on the September rise and every trip costs about R2,585 more than in August. Against March, the gap is close to R6,500. Now scale it. A rigid or interlink covering 10,000 km a month at 2.5 km per litre uses 4,000 litres. October alone adds roughly R8,100 a month to that truck’s diesel bill. Across a 20-vehicle fleet, that is about R162,000 a month before a single wage or tyre is paid.

Fleet Impact
The Fleet Playbook Before The 7 October Adjustment
Three weeks is enough time to act, and the actions are known. First, every contract without a live fuel clause loses money the day the new price lands. The renegotiation letters therefore go out now. Second, tank-to-engine reconciliation becomes the margin itself. At R32 a litre, a 200-litre drain equals R6,400 gone. Third, route and standing-time data decide which loads still pay. Live fleet vehicle tracking gives the kilometres and idle hours. In turn, Digit D-Fuel truck fuel monitoring gives the litres and the drains.
- Reprice using the Desk figure: about R1,015 extra per 1,000 km bulk round trip in October, and roughly R6,500 more than March. Any Q1 rate without a working fuel clause is underwater.
- Fill before 7 October where storage allows. A 20,000-litre depot tank topped up at September prices saves about R40,000 against the projected October wholesale rate.
- Budget for the higher figure, not the mid-month one. The first-week reading was R3.11; Brent at $100 can put it back there before month end.
- Watch 23 September. The Reserve Bank meets that day, and Anchor Capital says the Q2 contraction does not rule out a hike, which would raise finance costs alongside fuel.
